Pizza and movie nights are obvious bedfollows, so Pizza Hut Hong Kong has created a pizza box which doubles as a movie projector. Ogilvy & Mather Group Hong Kong has patented the packaging, which involves a special container that comes with a projector lens embedded in the pizza saver that sits in the middle of the pie.
The box is available in four designs (based on romance, action, sci-fi and horror movie genres). Once the customer inserts the lens into the side of the box, they can scan a code on the box with their phone, place the phone on a stand, and start watching their choice of short film.
The box launched on April 17 in Hong Kong as a test market and Pizza Hut now plans to adapt the concept for other regional markets.
You wouldn't think there was that much more you could do to a humble cardboard pizza box, but pizza purveyors seem determined to outdo each other by coming up with more outlandish packaging innovations. We've seen attempts by Pizza Hut to turn them into movie projectors, while Domino'shas turned them into Jack O' Lanterns. Now, Pizza Hut has unveiled what it's calling "the world's first playable DJ pizza box."
Created in partnership with printed electronics maker Novalia, the limited-edition pizza boxes sync via bluetooth to your laptop or smartphone and can be used with DJ-ing software. Users can select their favorite tracks and mix together just by pressing the cardboard controls. Pizza Hut's U.K. arm says the boxes will be given away at five of its restaurants that it will reveal on itsTwitter feed. In the meantime, you can enjoy DJ Vectra playiing with the box in the video seen here.
Pizza Hut may need to get a little less innovative with its packaging, lest its boxes draw the spotlight away from what's inside. Previously, the fast feeder debuted containers that turned into a DJ turntable and a movie projector, and now, just in time for football season, the Yum Brands chain has introduced a Flick Football Box, complete with field, goal post, football triangles and even a scorecard.
The box come with any medium pizza, including those available on its $5 Flavor menu.
While the box adds a dose of fun to the meal, it also introduces a bit of real competition as well. Pizza Hut is inviting customers to share videos of their flick football skills in the "Flick Football Challenge," for a chance to win free pizza from its $5 Flavor Menu. Players enter by sharing their videos on Twitter with the @PizzaHut tag and hashtag #PizzaHutHut. Winners will be determined weekly according to different challenges, including the most creative flick, most consecutive flicks and longest flick.
Pizza Hut has also appointed Dallas Cowboys placekicker Dan Bailey, who coincidentally wears No. 5, as its Flick Football ambassador.
"We know our fans enjoy a little competition and we're happy to provide a platform that lets them get in on the game in a whole new way while watching their favorite team," said David Timm, chief marketing officer, Pizza Hut in a statement. "The box brings some excitement back to the classic Flick Football game, and we are proud to bring some entertainment to the table along with our $5 Flavor Menu."
